The Day I Saw Jesus in the Sky | My Testimony

Ten years ago, I'd never imagined that I'd be writing about the day I saw Jesus in the sky.

But here we are.

Before I tell you what happened, I need to take you back a little, because this story actually begins many years earlier.

Growing Up Catholic...

I was raised Catholic.

I attended Catholic schools, went to Mass and was taught about God from a young age.

But here's the thing.

For much of my childhood, my relationship with God felt more like an obligation than a choice.

I went to church because I had to.

I prayed because I had to.

And although I was taught about Jesus and the teachings of the Catholic Church, I never felt like I had developed a genuine, personal relationship with God.

Faith was something I was expected to practise, rather than something I had personally come to believe in and embrace.

And as I grew older, I began questioning it all.

The way Catholicism was being taught to me throughout school simply wasn't resonating with me.

I struggled to connect with what I was learning, and slowly but surely, I found myself drifting further and further away from the Church and its teachings.

Eventually, I stopped attending Mass altogether.

But while my interest in religion was fading, another interest was beginning to take over my life.

Health and nutrition.

It All Started With a Three-Day Fast...

An assortment of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, eggs, fish and other whole foods

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I became fascinated by all things health and nutrition.

Low-carb, keto, vegan, raw vegan - you name it, I'd probably tried it.

I was constantly experimenting with different ways of eating, trying to understand how food affected my body and overall wellbeing.

And somewhere along the way, I discovered fasting.

Now, I'd heard about fasting before, but I became particularly interested in the practice of going without food for extended periods.

So I decided to embark on a three-day water fast.

That's right.

Three whole days. No food. Just water.

I know. To many people, that probably sounds incredibly extreme.

And looking back, I certainly wouldn't recommend that everyone rush out and try it. Extended fasting can carry health risks and isn't appropriate for everyone.

But at the time, I was approaching it primarily from a health perspective.

I had absolutely no idea that this experience would become connected to such a significant moment in my spiritual journey!

An Unexpected Calling Back to Church...

On Sunday, after completing my fast, I broke it with a green juice.

But something else happened that day.

I felt an unexpected calling to visit my local Catholic church.

Now, remember, by this point I'd been away from the Church for years.

Going to Mass was no longer part of my routine, and I certainly hadn't been planning to return.

And yet, for some reason, on this particular Sunday, I felt drawn to go back.

So I went.

During the homily - the part of the Catholic Mass where the priest reflects on the Scripture readings and explains how they relate to our lives - something extraordinary happened.

I was suddenly overcome by the most overwhelming feeling of love.

It wasn't simply that I felt happy or emotional.

It was a profound sense of being completely and utterly loved.

A love that seemed to wash over my entire being.

And although I didn't fully understand what was happening at the time, I now believe I was experiencing the presence of the Holy Spirit.

It was unlike anything I'd experienced before.

For someone who had grown up associating faith with obligation, this was something entirely different.

For the first time, my experience of God felt deeply personal.

But Something Felt Strange...

After Mass, I looked around at the people leaving the church.

And I remember feeling strangely disconnected.

Here I was, having just experienced what felt like the most extraordinary love imaginable, yet everyone around me seemed to be going about their day as normal.

I remember wondering whether anyone else had felt what I'd felt.

At the time, it almost seemed as though everyone else was asleep to something I had suddenly awakened to.

Of course, looking back, I realise I had no way of knowing what anyone else was experiencing in their hearts.

But that was genuinely how I felt.

I wanted to understand what had just happened to me.

And little did I know, the day wasn't over yet.

The Night I Saw Jesus in the Sky

That very same evening, I was walking through the city with my cousin.

It was nighttime.

And at one point, I looked up into the sky.

That's when I saw it.

An outline of Jesus, formed in lights against the night sky.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I immediately turned to my cousin and asked whether he could see what I was seeing.

He couldn't.

But I could.

And in that moment, something shifted within me.

After the overwhelming experience of love I'd felt at Mass earlier that day, seeing what I believed to be the image of Jesus felt deeply personal.

I can't tell you exactly why I saw what I saw, or why my cousin didn't see it.

I can only tell you what I experienced and what it meant to me.

For the first time in my life, I felt a profound certainty that I wasn't alone.

I was being guided.

I was loved.

And I began to believe that God was reaching out to me.

Looking Back...

What's remarkable to me is how unexpectedly this all unfolded.

I'd grown up Catholic, but for so many years, faith had felt like something I was simply expected to follow.

I'd gradually drifted away from the Church, and by the time I began exploring health and nutrition, returning to Catholicism wasn't even on my mind.

I hadn't embarked on that fast hoping to have a religious experience.

I was interested in health and nutrition.

I wasn't planning some grand return to the Catholic Church.

And I certainly wasn't expecting to look up into the night sky and see what I believed to be Jesus.

Yet that Sunday became one of the most significant days of my spiritual journey.

Today, as I continue growing in my Catholic faith, I look back on that experience with an enormous sense of gratitude.

Not because I have all the answers.

But because it marked the beginning of a deeper understanding of something I believe every human being longs to know.

That we are loved.

That our lives have meaning.

And that God may be closer to us than we realise.

If you're reading this and you're questioning your faith, searching for God or wondering whether He even exists, I want to encourage you to keep seeking.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

I certainly didn't.

And perhaps that's one of the most beautiful things about faith.

Sometimes, the journey begins long before we even realise we're on it.

With love,

Dominique Carla
